Alpha week at CAU

The Alpha Phi chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated at Clark Atlanta University have a week of activities including the Miss Black and Gold pageant. What you see here is something of a display a big rubber gorilla and the fraternity letters.

In front of Woodruff Library. Nice African type sculpture outside of the academic library serving the Atlanta University Center which is home to such historic HBCUs as Morehouse College, Spelman College, Morris Brown College, and Clark-Atlanta Unviersity. There's a lot of history inside too.

The first multimedia message

So this is going to be a first. I got me a new phone over the weekend and this means that I'm going to start posting pictures here from my camera phone. Neat huh. Hopefully they'll be of interest and if not well this is just new content isn't it. I'm going to have fun and I hope you enjoy.

BTW, this picture is on Fair Street. The tower is on a dorm, Graves Hall on the campus of Morehouse College. It's a Freshman dorm with a lot of history and nicely designed too.

I went to a Catholic Church for the first time...

On Wednesday night I went to St. Elizabeth Catholic Church located in the Bronzeville (also known as the Black Metropolis because it is a historic black neighborhood) neighborhood at about 41st & Michigan Avenue. And don't think I went to mass, it was actually for a memorial service of a family friend. And I thought it was nice.

The church was a lot more intimate than I'm used to. A nice pit with a table where the candles were lit and the podium in the background with a water fountain in the back. A big chair for the pastor. The benches were arranged in an unusual pattern that created a pit. It was arranged in the usual two rows of pews with a center aisle and outside aisle. I'm think I should find my way to a Catholic Church service one day.

I want to share this song that we sung during the memorial service there. It was nice.

The American President

After touring the White House last Saturday I just had to watch this movie. I also hadn't seen this one in years but not because of a broken VCR (as I had this film on VHS) but due to the real life consequences of September 11th. Before then I liked to pop this movie in every chance I got, a distinction only held by my Star Trek movies.

Anyway I popped this movie in as soon as I returned from Washington, DC. This was a good movie. It was written by West Wing creator and scribe Aaron Sorkin. It was basically a political movie with a romantic comedy plot.

Now consider this. The year was 1995 and I can't say that the President we had at that time exactly made me proud, but Andrew Shepherd (Michael Douglas) was a President I can look up to. Yeah he was a Democrat but he wasn't a bad leader (and that's only because he was written that way). All the same I loved the discussion of policy in this film.

Then he meets Sidney Ellen Wade (Annette Benning) who visits the White House as part of her job. Then she catches the eye of the leader of the free world and the most of the film has him juggling his duties as President as well as maintaining a romantic relationship with a woman whose job it was to get tough with him in the first place.

In the course of this movie the President is pounded by a Republican Senator (Richard Dreyfuss) who wants to take his job. By the end of this movie the President rips the Senator a new one and just as he starts to lose momentum, he regains it by the time the movie ends at the state of the union.

This is a great movie and it without a doubt gives you that great patriotic feeling. Even if you may not like the fact that the President has a girlfriend or that she might spend a night at the White House.
